Character Information

General
Canon Source: Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
Canon Format: Manga only.
Character's Name: Mukuro Rokudo.
Character's Age: 15-16

What form will your character's NV take? A polished mirror lined in wood, with no handle. Given the strong religious motif of Mukuro’s character, I feel this is an appropriate wink-and-nod to the idea of the polished mirror in Buddhism.

Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: Mukuro is a master illusionist, able to fool the senses of any but another master illusionist into seeing, feeling, hearing, and, ultimately, believing, whatever illusions he constructs. This can be a horribly destructive power, but it can also be an unusually helpful one; a major plot point in canon is that he used his powers to create illusionary organs for Chrome. It also indicates that Mukuro has an incredible amount of innate energy and focus.

Unlike Mammon, Mukuro blends the physical with the mystical, so he’s also skilled in combat using his trusty trident. The trident is an unusual one, though, in that if he scratches or otherwise injures an opponent, he can then possess their bodies. This doesn’t extend to their minds, though. He’s able to possess people’s bodies when his red eye’s pupil changes to 六. The preceding five numbers are all reflections of various illusions that he calls up, from animals to demons.

Weapons: His trident, which he seems to store in a mysterious zero space (or maybe it’s an illusion?), and his box weapon, which manifests as an owl, are his primary pieces of equipment. Lately his trident has been appearing as a khakkhara, furthering his religious motif.

History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: This manga is so long by now ugh.
Point in Canon: The point in time where Tsuna has appealed to all his most powerful allies and would-be enemies to band together against Checkerface.

Character Personality: In terms of personality, Mukuro is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, you have an absolutely merciless killer. He's the product of a group of people that talked about the children they were experimenting on like they weren't human. Presumably, one or more of those adults who condoned these experiments were Mukuro's parents. That's going to breed some serious distrust of people in humanity, the kind that not just sticks with you but turns into a rather festering mess later in life.

He had the aim of causing a World War (literally) when first introduced by canon, so Mukuro is by no means a nice person. He has no problem with taking advantage of any weakness or tenderness he's shown, from Hibari's near-fatal weakness in cherry blossoms to Tsuna's endless mercy for his opponents. He enjoys tormenting people and seeing their anguish (emotional and physical). It's no coincidence that he's one of the world's strongest illusionists, as using his opponents' weakness of mind to his own ends is his strong suit.

The rub of it is, though, that when Mukuro cares about somebody he really seems to with all his convoluted, messed-up being. It's seen most blatantly in his relationships with Chikusa and Ken. Upon their second escape from Vendice, Mukuro sacrifices himself so that they can escape- however, he doesn't do it in such blatant terms. No, he has to disguise his intentions behind the classical tsundere-style complaint about their speed. Given the level of loyalty extended to Mukuro from two likely just-as-damaged people, it's highly likely that Mukuro's stunt of self-sacrifice isn't the first of its kind.

There's also the matter of Chrome. While she did make a pact with Mukuro that would allow him to take over her body, he doesn't seem to use her very much. Chrome is seen to be in full control of her body for the large part of the manga, and the only times Mukuro seems to emerge are when Chrome is in danger or if he's feeling mischievous. He also calls her his "cute" Chrome, indicative of a genuine, if incredibly creepy, affection for her. Perhaps he has a weakness for the neglected- Chrome's parents are overheard suggesting that they just let her die, not because of her potentially poor quality of life in the future, but because she would be a pain to take care of.

Regardless of what exactly Mukuro means by these affections, he likes power. Power over Tsuna, power over Hibari, power in the social dynamic of himself, Ken, and Chikusa- he wants it all. He's arrogant enough to know that he deserves that power, too, and he isn't shy about getting it in any way possible. In his mind, basically, Mukuro was born to top the entire world. That said, over the past few arcs, his personality has been changing to be a little less closed to others and a little more open to gentling. He no longer regularly couches his moments of kindness or gentleness in threats of death, for example.

It’s shown in canon that he’s come to appreciate Tsuna’s strength and the fact that he can rely on him. In a major character turning point, he trusted his most precious person- Chrome- to be safely kept in Tsuna’s care. He’s also shown himself to be growing to understand the full benefits of strategic unions, rather than categorically rejecting everything reaching to touch him as he did in his youth. It’s slow going, to be sure, but it’s possible to earn his trust, and thus his loyalty. As hard as he works to make it seem like it isn’t, that loyalty is as true as any other member of Tsuna’s inner circle.

That said, he still has the edge to him that none of Tsuna’s other friends do, save perhaps Hibari. Mukuro grew up in a world where he was expected to die, and had to fight every second, tooth and nail, to make sure that didn’t happen. He's made that happen in various ways, from shocking flashes of charisma to outright blackmail. He's not above persuasion in any way he can manage, with no interest in pride but all focus on survival.

Character Plans: Due to his history, Mukuro isn’t the type to take being imprisoned, even in such a large place as a city, sitting down. I plan to have him take things slow for a bit, since he's eager to escape but clever enough to figure out he needs to know how to work in this new place. His long game is, of course, to escape by any means possible. Reading on the setting, though, I think his shorter game might be to try to start some kind of class warfare.

Appearance/PB: See icons of this journal. Mukuro is tall, painfully thin, and has a remarkably long sweep of hair.

Writing Samples

First Person Sample

I have a question for anybody that might be so inclined to answer: why do you think that, of all the places in this rotten, decaying corpse of a city, all the new citizens come to in the baseball diamond?

I knew a man who had some knowledge of baseball, I suppose you could say. I don’t think he’d give me a very good answer, though. What do you think? Are we out? Have we hit a home run? Or maybe the game’s over and it’s just waiting for us all to go home~

Third Person Sample

If asked a week ago, Mukuro would have said that his biggest worry was fighting and defeating Checkerface. Tsuna could appeal to his better side all he wanted (and of course that was all very cute and dramatic and Tsuna-ish), but his mind had been made up when Tsuna asked him the first time, after all. He just liked to toy.

Now, though, faced with the maw of blackness every night, and such terribly real teeth in that maw, he felt the flutterings of self-mockery. Did he really think it would be so easy? It had been getting better. Part of it had simply been age; they all raised less eyebrows living alone as sixteen-year-olds rather than fourteen-year-olds. Part of it had even been Tsuna. His determination to make the world better for everybody chafed. It reminded him of things that weren’t the paths to darker things, made him turn his face up to the sky instead of down to the earth.

And now? Now he listened to the whispers of the people, tasted the currents of injustice, and felt something in him start to heat again. There was no Tsuna here to temper his rage with fists, no Reborn to invite him to play to ease his loneliness. All he could think of, lying at night on his lumpy mattress (better than any he’d actually ever slept on), was the imbalance in wages, the way money flowed and the way water dripped and the way that the poor suffered, suffered, suffered under the weight of darkness and corruption.

Somewhere deep in him, those embers leapt- and caught into a fire.
