It took him a while to get a hang of English on top of the multitude of languages crowding his skull, some dead, some still living. That was his path- living with the dead, dying with the living. What did he care if his 'r's rolled off his tongue too swiftly? What did he care if his 's's were the sibilant angry hisses of snakes about to kill?

Not much, really, which was why he was sitting against the brick of a building in some American city watching people go by. He'd gotten sick of the looks he'd gotten when speaking, some disdainful, some teeth-grittingly infatuated. So he had an accent? So did they, from what he could tell.

The heat of the city had settled an itch into his bones, though. He watched people pass with a mild expression, waiting for something better to come along and sweep him up. He did love to be swept up; he loved even more when he did the sweeping in return.

Dave Strider, infinitely cool guy, isn't always the sort of man to stop and check out a stranger. He's too cool for that, you know? A sort of weary indifference is all he has for the world, a quick pithy quip that would cut to the core and he'd be gone again. Except his metaphors always rambled a bit too long- more than a bit, that's why they called it rambling, Jesus Christ but one day he'd learn not to shove his foot right in his mouth when things started getting hot and actually keep it cool. Except maybe he cared a little too much to actually be cool, sometimes, couldn't just take shit with a straight poker face.

And weird guys checking people out definitely get a bit of a pause. The guy looks like something out of a movie; he's not sure which kind, probably one of John's shitty ones. Something like a mafioso meets a rebellious punk rocker, which is the oddest mash-up he's thought up in a long time but it might go ok together. He's weird though, no mistake, people in Houston don't look like that.
